Diabetes: A Sticky Situation

1–2 minutes

Prior to the 1950’s, only 1% of the population had type II diabetes and now we are facing alarming numbers of adults and children with what was once called adult-onset diabetes. Currently, 128 million Americans are either diabetic or pre-diabetic and of the 90 million who are pre-diabetic, 90% don’t even know this sticky situation is brewing inside. For those who understand the systemic destruction that diabetes leaves in it’s wake, you fully appreciate the magnitude of this health crisis.

You may be wondering WHY this chronic disease has escalated to the degree that is has in such a short period of time? Our modern society certainly hasn’t helped. Fast food chains came on the scene in the 1940’s and their presence has only skyrocketed across our country ever since. Add to that a growing propensity for sedentary lifestyles and a love of comfort over pushing ourselves to excel and you’ve got two major negative inputs. Not to mention more environmental toxins than we can count and our massive consumption of ultra-processed food (high-fructose corn syrup was created in 1957).

So…if these lifestyle choices (environmental toxins are less controllable) are contributing factors to the onslaught of type II diabetes, wouldn’t it make sense that we can largely control our own health?

The fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1C values that most providers adhere to to determine whether or not a person gets a diabetes diagnosis is >=126mg/dL fasting glucose and an A1C (3 month glucose avg) >=6.5. If you are nearing or exceeding these ranges, I’d strongly encourage you to take steps to alter your nutrition and exercise regimen (or begin one!). You may be pleasantly surprised that you can turn this in a better direction with some planning and extra effort!
