Happily Hydrated

1–2 minutes

You’ve probably heard this before, but by the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Our body is constantly signaling to us, but most of the time we’re not listening! Some research suggests that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated and this becomes even more important as we age.

Staying well-hydrated with water and electrolytes (i.e., sodium, potassium, magnesium, selenium) has a huge impact on almost every system in our bodies. A few of these include: cognitive function, heart and digestive health, weight management, improved energy and prevention of kidney stones and UTIs (urinary tract infections), in addition to fewer headaches.

Often, we only associate hydration and it’s opposite, dehydration, with hot and humid weather. However, staying adequately hydrated is important year-round and is especially important during the winter months when we may not feel as thirsty. We lose water + electrolytes during breathing and speaking, digestive processes and even while we’re asleep!

Natalie’s Nuggets–>

  1. Keep a water bottle with you at all times (preferably steel, not plastic)
  2. Sip throughout the day and refill as needed
  3. Stay stocked up with your favorite electrolyte replacement (watch out for those high in sugar) and drink it daily

*My personal favorite electrolyte supplement is a brand called LMNT (pronounced ‘element’) that has zero sugar, 1000mg sodium, 200mg potassium and 60mg magnesium. They have a variety of wonderful flavors and I pass them out to my friends and family all the time (NOTE: I am not affiliated with this company, just a big fan!).
